| Nobody thought the #2 Florida Gators could beat the previously undefeated #1
Ohio State Buckeyes – nobody except the Florida Gators.Gators Coach Urban
Meyer spoiled his Alma Mater's bid for a 5th school title, and captured Florida’s
2nd football crown with a convincing 41-14 victory in the 2007 Tostitos BCS
National Championship game.
The game started off with a bang as Ohio State star receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. returned
the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. On their ensuing drive,Florida
then answered with a quick strike of their own, capped by Offensive Player of the
Game, senior quarterback Chris Leak’s TD pass.“My legacy was to get the
University of Florida back here,”the MVP later said. “It's the greatest feeling to be
national champs ... I’m just so proud of how hard we worked over the four years,
and we finally got to this point; then we took advantage of this opportunity.”
Heisman Trophy winner quarterback Troy Smith and the Buckeye offense
sputtered without an injured Ginn, Jr. against the tough Gator defense, which
sacked Smith 5 times, caused 2 turnovers, and held Ohio State to 86 yards of
offense. The Florida offense, led by the twin quarterback system of Leak and Tim
Tebow took over, scoring on 6 of their first 7 possessions en route to a 34-14
Gator lead at halftime.
